MTV have hit back at claims that they forced Daft Punk to pull out of a recent appearance on US TV show The Colbert Report, arguing that it was 'the artists 'decision'.

The dance duo cancelled their appearance on the satirical talk show last week, due to a contractual clash and prior agreement with MTV to appear at this month's VMA awards show. Host Stephen Colbert referred to the duo as 'click and clack' on his show, before revealing their no-show was as much as surprise to him as his viewers. "No one told me until two hours ago," he said on air.

Earlier this week, Colbert then claimed that MTV's decision to pull out came to the surprise of everyone - even Daft Punk themselves.

Now, an MTV representative has said that they had no part in Thomas Bangalter and Guy Manuel de Homem Christo cancelling their appearance on Colbert.

VMAs executive producer Jesse Ignjatovic told The Hollywood Reporter: "We don't put restrictions on anyone. I just think that we're talking to them about a moment and then things sort of change.

"I would not describe that as MTV putting restrictions on people -- it was up to that artist and their management what they wanted to do."

Speculation is still rife as to whether the controversy was all an ellaborate stunt to promote Daft Punk's appearance at the VMAs and their new single 'Lose Yourself To Dance' - which was released yesterday
