Round one to Katy Perry - the US pop superstar is on course for her eighth US No.1 single, with new single 'Roar' shifting 450,000 copies this week, double the 225k Lady Gaga has shifted of her new track, 'Applause'.

Lady Gaga rush-released her new single this week after the track leaked online, sparking a chart battle between the US pop superstars - but round one appears to have gone to Perry, as her sales are comfortably ahead of her outlandish competitor. Perry has sold 450,000 copies of 'Roar' and is sure to top the US Billboard charts, while Gaga has shifted 225,000 copies of 'Applause'.

Katy Perry has previously enjoyed seven US No.1 singles, topping the charts with 'I Kissed A Girl', 'California Gurls', 'Teenage Dream', 'Firework', 'E.T.', 'Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)' and 'Part Of Me'.

'Roar' is yet to be released in the UK, but Gaga is unlikely to score a chart topper on this side of the Atlantic either, as Ellie Goulding is set to score her first No.1 this week with her single 'Burn' currently ahead in the British midweek charts.

Sales of Lady Gaga's single are not to be sniffed at, but will come as a slight disappointment to the superstar, who was accused of attempting to exploit her devoted fanbase, offering a meet and greet to fans who proved they had bought the most copies of her new single.

Writing on Twitter earlier this week, Gaga said;
