US blogger Perez Hilton has denied posing a threat to Lady Gaga's safety after the 'Applause' singer expressed fear on Twitter in the belief that he was stalking her and her family.

Gaga and Hilton have publicly fallen out over his criticism of her new single, and last night (18 August, 2013) Lady Gaga responded with shock and fury to a fan's tweet informing her that the flamboyant US celebrity was outside her home.

In a string of tweets, which she has now deleted, Gaga wrote: "STAY AWAY FROM ME + MY FAMILY YOU ARE SICK TRYING TO RENT AN APARTMENT IN MY BUILDING TO STALK ME. LEAVE ME ALONE!!!"

Gaga has faced a tough week, with 'Applause' greeted by poor sales and mixed reaction from critics. Gaga hit out at critics, and Hilton in particular, adding:

"DO I NEED TO BE SHOT IN THE HEAD FOR PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND THAT HIM AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT HARASSES ME HAS GONE TOO FAR?

The duo were formerly friends, although the Gaga above is not the real thing - FYI

Perez Hilton has now responded to Gaga in a statement, denying he poses any threat to the singer, and claiming all accusations of stalking are false.

"My heart hurts that my former very good friend Lady GaGa, a person I used to call my 'wifey' and traveled the world with, is making very public, untrue allegations about me on Twitter.

"While it is still too painful for me to go into detail about why I chose to no longer make her a part of my life, I will say that I am a critic and not a stalker.

"Any allegation that I am stalking her is utterly false, defamatory and now appears to be putting me in danger.

"I will continue to be a critic - in a way that is not mean or involves name-calling, and I will continue to have an opinion and talk about music and songs, like GaGa's 'Applause'.

"As the suggestion that I pose a danger to GaGa is preposterous, if fans want to send a message of support, they should buy her music instead of sending me death threats."

Lady Gaga deleted her tweets and announced a fresh start for fans, tweeting:
