Lady Gaga thinks the world needs to ‘lighten up’ when it comes to pop music in the wake of the immense reaction to Miley Cyrus’ VMA twerking.

With the world split on whether Miley’s performance was shocking, silly or entertaining, Gaga feels that there are more important issues to be concerned with.

In her only newspaper interview ahead of her iTunes Festival performance, she told The Sun: “I don’t like to pass judgement on Miley.

“Generally, people need to lighten up about pop music, it’s about entertainment. It is here to make people feel happy. Especially in America there is an excessive dragging of female artists and I don’t want to contribute to that.”

Asked about her feelings on human rights issues, the ‘Applause’ singer said she felt the world should be denying Russia an income from tourism generated by the winter Olympics in protest at the country’s equality and human rights failings.

“A country where so much abuse of youth is happening right now, how can we bring so much attention to that part of the world and reward them for that?” she told the newspaper.

“For me it’s shocking, then again everyone thinks Miley Cyrus is shocking and that’s the world we live in...” she said.

Gaga’s latest single ‘Applause’ failed to perform with the degree of success expected of it, and is currently No. 6 in the UK iTunes chart, with Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ shooting straight to No. 1 following its early release today.

Lady Gaga will headline the iTunes Festival at the Roundhouse tonight (September 1).
