Fall Out Boy have recorded a series of punk songs they recorded with Ryan Adams, embracing the spontaneity and DIY ethic of punk bands like Black Flag.

Inviting Noisey to the meet them in the back of an RV the band explained that as the songs were record in a simplistic stress free environment, they felt that woud be the best way for them to showcase them as well.

Ryan Adams, who used to play sets solely comprised of songs he’d written in his dressing room, encouraged the band to craft songs off the cuff.

Pete Wenz explained: “We came in with four or five ideas, but it went beyond that. Ryan was like, ‘Do it on the spot’.

“It was a great experiment as a band. It’s what we do; we’re not that kind of band really.”

While Wentz conceded that the recordings were in essence an excerise that had made their way into the public domain, he also described them as being an antithesis to the bands last record, Save Rock And Roll.

Rock and Roll needs to be challenged right now,” Wentz explained.

“The most rock and roll thing you could do is do what, like, Skrillex is doing right now. It felt good to get in there and make some noise that was what people would have thought of as standard ‘Rock and Roll’.”

Fall Out Boy released Save Rock And Roll earlier this year

The band also spoke of how hard it can be to produce new material while on the promo trail for a recently released record, saying that recording these punk songs with Ryan Adams was a good thing to do regardless of whether or not anyone heard the tracks.

“It was fun to just, like, do the songs,” Wentz said.

“I’m glad people will get to hear them, at the same time when we were making hem it was like, ‘Wow, this is literally just fun to do’.”

The band explained that they had Black Flag, Misfits and Descendents in mind when they came to working on these songs.
