You read that right, Bob Geldof is going to endure a one-hour commercial flight into Space with the company Space XC.
The Boomtown Rats frontman is due to start his training in a flight simulator, based in the Netherlands later this year. He will be in a Lynx Mark II shuttle powered by four rockets and will take off from a normal runway, reaching a speed of around 2,200mph.
In a statement, Geldof said: "Being the 'first Irishman in space' is not only a fantastic honour, but pretty mind-blowing. Elvis may have left the building, but Bob Geldof has left the planet!"
He added: "Who would have thought it possible in my lifetime? The first rock astronaut space rat!"
Geldof will make the record-breaking trip in 2015.
In 2002, N*Sync singer Lance Bass' dreams of going into space were dashed when a US broadcaster was unable to raise the £20million to send the boyband star into outer space.
