A$AP Rocky has apologised after his uncomfortable behaviour with openly gay basketball player Jason Collins onstage at the VMAs last month prompted viewers to accuse him of being homophobic.

As Collins introduced Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' performance of 'Same Love', a song about same-sex relationships, and gave a speech about equality, Rocky alternated between laughing and pulling awkward grimaces.

After a flood of online criticism and jokes at his expense, the Harlem rapper has now apologised in an interview with The Stashed.

Watch the onstage incident below.

"I’m mad that my facial expressions was like that because I’m not homophobic at all, and that whole thing just came off real homophobic," he said. "I apologise to Jason for that, because people was laughing and shit."

A$AP Rocky has been vocal about his tolerance of the gay community in the past, saying: "One big issue in hip-hop is the gay thing. It’s 2013, and it’s a shame that, to this day, that topic still gets people all excited. It’s crazy."
