US star Janelle Monae, whose new album Electric Lady has been hailed as one of the best soul releases of the year, has refused to comment on her sexuality, having attracted a huge number of lesbian fans.

In a recent interview with Pride magazine she revealed that she had no idea so many people were speculating as to what her sexuality was and when questioned during an appearance on US radio show Sway In The Morning to promote the album, she was questioned further about her personal life.

The singer refused to give a straight-out answer to the question and instead went for a politically safe option saying, "Women are amazing...and so are guys. There's nothing wrong with being bisexual, there's nothing wrong with being lesbian or gay. I am an advocate.

"I have friends who are in same-sex relationships and I feel love has no sexual orientation. Love has no religious belief. Love is the purest and most important thing we can possess for ourselves and for others."

After further questioning, Monae remained quiet about the rumours and emphasised that her personal life is private, adding, "I keep my personal life very much to myself. I want everybody to focus on my music. I also don't want to let anybody down. I want women to still be attracted to me. Go get my album! I want men to still be attracted to me so I have to be political in this. So I can't really tell y'all."

Monae's second studio album Electric Lady is available now and features previous single, 'QUEEN' as well as collaborations with Prince and Solange.
