It's emerged that rapper MIA has been fighting a $1.5 million fine behind the scenes after putting her middle finger up during Madonna's 2012 Superbowl half-time show.

In February 2012, when Madonna performed her current single at the time ‘Give Me All Your Luvin’ at the Superbowl half time show with the help of MIA and Nicki Minaj, rapper and Wikileaks fan MIA couldn’t resist the temptation to cause a bit of controversy and gave the finger for a split second.

Nothing happened at the time, and everyone thought the ‘Bad Girls’ singer had somehow gotten away with it. But that’s not the case, as it emerged today a case has been building against MIA ever since the incident, and now the NFL want her to pay a $1.5million fine and publically apologise.

According to the documents, MIA, real name Maya Arulpragasam, agreed prior to the recording that she would “ensure that all elements of [her] Performance, including without limitation [her] wardrobe, shall be consistent with such goodwill and reputation.” The NFL argue that Arulpragasam breached this contract.

Now, the rapper, who is an outspoken political activist, and her legal team are going to fight the fine by going “public with an explanation of how ridiculous it was for the NFL and its fans to devote such furor to this incident,” her lawyer, Howard King announced.

He also went on to say how the singer wants her fans to help with her appeal: “We encourage people to submit their examples of how the actions of the NFL, its stars, coaches, advertisers, broadcasters, team doctors and owners have damaged or destroyed any vestiges of any reputation for wholesomeness ever enjoyed by the NFL. These submissions, which we plan to use to bolster MIA's defense, will help balance the playing field, as they very well could eliminate the burden of undertaking a formal survey of the history of unwholesome behavior, can be made to the MIA defense team by email to NFL@khpblaw.com.”

MIA’s fourth studio album, Mathangi, is due to be released on 5 November, 2013.
