Elbow have spoken out about their upcoming sixth album, saying that the record is 'experimental', has 'big themes' and is about 'mid-life crisis'.
Yesterday, the Mercury-winning Manchester indie heroes announced the release of their new album, currently untitled, on 10 March 2013. The album will be available on CD, Deluxe CD, Vinyl and download. On the same date, Elbow will also release their first ever live DVD, ‘Live At Jodrell Bank’ - consisting of two CDs and a DVD of their entire performance at the Cheshire Observatory in 2012.
Now, the band have revealed a potential title for the album, and the inspiration behind it.
Speaking to The Daily Star, frontman Guy Garvey said: "The record might be called All At Once because you are all ages at once at 40. Society tells you that you have to live in the moment, so you see guys at 40 looking more thoughtful than anyone older or younger.
A lot of my friends are discovering ecstasy as they near 40 and I'm going: 'What the hell are you doing?' We were on the fringes of the E generation but we didn't get into it. "But how does a rock star have a mid-life crisis? Sell his motorbike?"
Speaking to NME about the sound of the album, Garvey continued: "(We've been) messing with tempos here and there… it’s got some old-school spacerock sensibilities. It’s very celebratory in parts, as you’d expect."
Garvey added: "Tempo changes in the middle of songs happen less and less often, but it’s a great musical tool. There are more of those from us than normal on this record."
