Pixies frontman Black Francis has spoken candidly about Kim Deal's surprise exit from the band, saying it was 'devastating' and an 'awkward moment'.
The rocker has revealed what went down behind the scenes of Deal's exit, which was announced back in June, 2013.
"She quit the band. It was an awkward moment. We didn’t hug or shake hands or anything. [Guitarist] Joey [Santiago] and I just stood up and said, ‘OK'," he said in a new interview with Rolling Stone. "Then we had to get out of there, so we immediately went to a bar. I had to move from coffee to alcohol."
Francis recalled the dinner they had had as a band two nights previously, describing it as their 'last supper'.
"I can’t remember the last time we all sat down and had a meal, just the four of us. It was wonderful," he said. "We broke bread together, shot the shit and had a nice meal. After the meal, Kim wanted to go back to her lodging, so we all walked her to a cab. Thinking back now, I realize this was her saying goodbye. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but I think it was meant to be our last supper."

Band manager Richard Jones further revealed how Deal's exit affected the remaining members - but it gave them the drive to get into the studio and record new material for the first time since 1991. "Everyone was just devastated,” he said. “But everybody believed in the songs. We decided to just carry on and see what happens."
Francis recently denied rumours of a rift surrounding Kim's exit from the band, saying: "There's never really been a lot of drama in this band."
He also praised Deal's replacement, Kim Shattuck, saying: "She's really happy to be here. She's been doing music for as long as we have, maybe a bit longer. She's committed to the lifestyle. And she's excited."
