M.I.A. has revealed her new fashion line for Versace, which has been inspired by the bootlegs she saw on London markets while she was growing up.

The Matangi star reveals that her choice to base her designs on copycat items was part of a plan to 'invert' urban fashion culture, she tells the website WWD.

"The theme of counterfeits, of those that produce and sell them has always been part of the culture of M.I.A.," says the singer and rapper. "When I was contacted by Versace, it seemed a great idea to invert the circle. Versace's designs have always been copied, now it's Versace that copies the copies, so those that copy must copy the copies. So this will continue."

In a statement to The Daily Mail, Donatella Versace speaks of her love for MIA's designs, telling the newspaper: "I love the energy of the street, so when M.I.A. suggested we use bootlegs of Versace, I thought it was such an incredible idea."

"It’s fast, loud, unafraid, and brings together the worlds of music and fashion."

M.I.A releases her new album, Matangi, on 5 November 2013.
