The Pogues' guitarist Philip Chevron has died aged 56, after a long running cancer battle.

Chevron was treated for head and neck cancer in 2007 but given a clean bill of health in April 2012. Sadly, a new tumour appeared in August 2012 which was deemed inoperable. He died this morning (Tuesday 8 October).

Posting on their official website, The Pogues said: "After a long illness Philip passed away peacefully this morning. We all send our sincere condolences to his family."

The guitarist joined the legendary Irish punk-folk band as a temporary memberafter their debut album, Red Roses for Me. He quickly became a permanent guitarist for their sophomore effort, Rum, Sodomy And The Lash.

While Shane MacGowan was the key songwriter for The Pogues, Chevron is famous for writing fan favourite 'Thousands Are Sailing'. Listen to it below.

Chevron was also seen as a pioneer for former one of Ireland's first punk bands when he formed The Radiators in 1976 - whose tracks later covered by the likes of Christy Moore and Mary Coughlan.
