Tori Amos last night debuted new musical The Light Princess at the National Theatre, London, saying the project had been 'completely inspiring'.

The American singer/songwriter co-wrote the production alongside Australian playwright Samuel Adamson. The Light Princess, described as a 'dark fairytale about grief, rebellion and the power of love', took the pair five years to write, and Amos said the process had reinvigorated her.

"It's been a completely inspiring project - it's pushed me," the singer, 50, stold the BBC on the opening night. Amos also described seeing the production for the first time as "magical", adding that she was keen to do it all again with her writing partner, saying: "If I got another crack at it I'd sure like Samuel Adamson along for the ride."

The Light Princess, based on a 19th century fairytale, reimagined with a modern edge to focus on the impact of grief and sexual awakening on teenagers. Amos explained why she thought it was important not to shy away from these subjects.

"It is a rite if passage becoming an adult - it's really tough whether in your teens or your 20s having to be responsible and to deal with things. These are not easy times," she said, adding, "our biggest challenge was that we had to make sure that a fairytale could work in the 21st century."

So far, the musical has recieved mix reviews, with The Guardian concluding it lacked "any real emotional punch". However, The Evening Standard announced it was "worth the wait".
