Katy Perry has opened up about writing her upcoming album Prism, and says it helped her out of a 'small depression'.

The 'Roar' singer told Entertainment Tonight that the album includes some 'dark material' following her much-publicised divorce from comedian Russell Brand.

"I came out of a small depression by writing this record," she admitted. "There's a song called 'By the Grace of God' which is a vulnerable song.

"One line talks about me laying on the bathroom floor and looking in the mirror and deciding to stay. You don't really have to read between the lines. There's really kind of heavy material there. It's one of the darkest songs on the record."

Perry recently debuted thirty second snippets of Prism tracks, including 'By the Grace of God', online, following on from lead single 'Roar' and tracks 'Walking On Air' and 'Dark Horse' which are available to stream in full.

Prism, the star's third studio album, will be released on 21 October, 2013.
