After scoring a No.1 album this week with debut release Tribute, John Newman has shared his opinions on TV talent shows, claiming X Factor is a 'lazy' way into the industry - despite offering a great opportunity for artists such as himself.
After achieving a number one with his debut single 'Love Me Again' and featuring on a Mercury Nominated album with Rudimental, the singer is now a sought-after writer and producer but he feels that people are starting to lose their creativity, and feels the easy route of X Factor could be to blame.
"If you want to do that, it's a little bit lazy I think," he tells Gigwise. "If you're a very creative person you should put all into it and the funny thing is, as an artist, as a successful writer and producer I've been getting emails every ten minutes from people saying "work with me, work with me" and you're in a bit of a world of that, people don't want to do things for themselves anymore.
"They struggle and they beg instead of just concentrating on what's good."
However, as the biggest music show on TV across the world, Newman admits it does offer opportunities for artists such as him to gain exposure.
"The X Factor and things like that are great because for an artist like me, it's one of the biggest selling shows in the country," he says. "I did it in Australia and I went to No.2.
"In terms of X Factor here, for me growing up in a small little town, if I didn't want to be a songwriter, if I didn't want to be a producer, if I just wanted to be a singer, if that's what I just wanted to do, then there's a website for it. You can try, whereas before there wasn't that, you were stuck in a whole world of 'what do I do?' Whereas at least there is somewhere for you to go now."
