More about: Robbie Williams
Robbie Williams has poured scorn on the Idol Award he won at the Q Awards last night, publicly belittling the award bestowed on him at the ceremony at the Grosvenor House event.
The former Take That star didn't seem in the best of moods on the night. He used his speech to mock the whole event as well as promoting his new album in a self-deprecating way. That's putting it kindly.
It's something of a tradition for British artists to appear less than grateful for awards. Russell Brand's stinging speech at the GQ Awards, bringing up sponsors Hugo Boss's working relationship with the Nazis, is still fresh in everyone's mind. Williams didn't dredge up history in the same away, he just had a bit of a moan, saying: "Of all the made-up awards shows to get a celebrity to come out" about the posh bash. Of the award itself, he said its fate was to go "with the heap of them I already have in the house"
He did mention his new album, the 'hilariously' titled Swings Both Ways. Referencing the fact that he'd been let loose on the writing side of the process, he scoffed: "There's five of my own compositions on there, which I'm sure you're fucking thrilled about."
It was a strangely petulant performance from Williams. Hopefully he was just having a bad day and this isn't a sign of a mid-life crisis as he approaches 40.
