John Cale has spoken movingly of his relationship with former Velvet Underground bandmate Lou Reed, after Reed passed away yesterday at the age of 71.
Cale, who co-founded the legendary New York band in 1964 with Lou Reed, released an emotional statement that began in memory of close friend.
"The news I feared the most, pales in comparison to the lump in my throat and the hollow in my stomach," he said.

Welsh-born Cale, 71, made reference to the fractious relationship the pair had over the years, saying: "Two kids have a chance meeting and 47 years later we fight and love the same way – losing either one is incomprehensible."
Tension between Cale and Reed climaxed in 1993 when the pair vowed to never work with one another again after a Velvet Underground reunion. However in his statement Cale has suggested the two were on good terms again, saying: "The laughs we shared just a few weeks ago, will forever remind me of all that was good between us"
"Unlike so many with similar stories – we have the best of our fury laid out on vinyl, for the world to catch a glimpse," Cale added.
Reed died yesterday of liver disease, having previously undergone a liver transplant earlier this year.
