Albums that divide critics and audiences are a funny bunch, musical Marmite that can later proven to be musical gold. The latest addition to the club seems to be Arcade Fire's Reflektor - but who else was met with caution before being greeted as a classic?

An LP that a divides the world is in its nature challenging - a formulation that pushes its already established audience to land on one side of the fence or the other without bothering to care about alienating them. In their own way, every album in history that has divided critics can be a pardigm shift within the musical spectrum whether small or large. As such, they are incredibly important pieces of musical history, whether they come to be accepted or not is irrelevant.

So from Radiohead to The Ramones and David Bowie to Daft Punk, here are the albums that split opinion but went on to become utterly game-changing.
