James Blake wins Mercury Music Prize 2013 with Overgrown

Electro star beats David Bowie, Arctic Monkeys & more

James Blake has been crowned the winner of the Mercury Music Prize 2013 with his second album, Overgrown.

Blake was also nominated for the Prize for his debut album and was seen as somewhat of an outsider this year, with Laura Mvula, Disclosure and David Bowie tipped as the favourites.

"Well, I lost a bet," said Blake, accepting the award. "On the other hand, I should thank a couple of people. I should thank my parents for showing me the importance of being self-sufficient."

Speaking to Nick Grimshaw afterwards, he said: "I feel completely emotional and overwhelmed. It takes me quite a lot to get me like that. I had convinced myself that it would have been a second year of being nominated but not winning. I can't believe I'm sitting here."

We spoke to Blake when he first nominated - where he admitted that he was thrilled to be up against David Bowie, and was looking forward the the Prize taking him to 'boss level'.
