Katy Perry has debuted at the top of the Billboard chart in the US with her third album, Prism, selling 286,000 copies in its first week.

The 'Roar' singer has had the largest sales week of 2013 for a female artist, and is second only to Daft Punk's Random Access Memories in terms of pop sales. Perry even outsold Miley Cyrus' Bangerz, which also debuted at No.1 three weeks ago, selling 270,000 copies.

The US star has also had the largest debut sales week for a female pop artist since Madonna released MDNA in 2012, which debuted at number one with 359,000. Furthermore, Prism is also Perry's biggest selling album yet, with previous release Teenage Dream shifting 192,000 copies in its first week back in 2010.

However, Reuters reports that the overall album sales for this week are the worst since the publication began charting in 1991, with sales falling to a record low of 4.5 million units.

Pearl Jam's Lightning Bolt, last week's No.1, has fallen to No.2, whilst Drake's Nothing Was The Same is still a big seller, clinging on to the No.3 spot. Miley Cyrus' Bangerz sits at number four.
