A North London chapel is to stage a memorial service in honour of late Velvet Underground icon Lou Reed this Sunday (3 November, 2013).

Newington Green Unitarian Chapel in Hackney will stage 'Wake On the Wild Side' this Sunday for fans and well-wishers to attend and pay their respects.

The chapel is known for its radical and liberal ties, and put the reasoning behind the event down to this, with a spokesperson for the chapel saying its congregation "has always walked on the wild side as a centre for dissent".

Listen to Lou Reed's 'Walk On the Wild Side' below:

The event will apparently see a variety of musicians, bands and 'ordinary people' (as dubbed by the church) paying tribute to the rock icon, whose death of liver disease was announced on Sunday. The service will be conducted by atheiest minister Andy Pakula, who said: "This would be a very different world without Lou Reed. There are many people who feel a distinct need to say goodbye."

Wake On the Wild Side will take place at Newington Green Unitarian Chapel in Hackney on Sunday at 3pm. Those who wish to attend should apply for free tickets via Eventbrite as space will be limited. The church also advises: "Dress code on Sunday is optional but people are encouraged to dress on the wild side."

Others who have paid tribute to Reed, who was 71, include David Bowie, The Strokes, Morrissey, and Iggy Pop.
