Headed by the enigmatic Conor 'O Brien, Villagers are a group on the right side of the folk revival, focussing on heartfelt lyrics and musical spirituality rather than gimicks. As Conor explains, his aim for the album was to take "dark themes" and "turn them into something quite universal and beautiful."
Performing 'My Lighthouse', the opening track from Mercury nominated album Awayland, we see the band exhibit this in full motion, lyrically lamenting the loss of a loved one and spinning tragedy into the beauty 'O Brien describes. The track works as a kind of mantra to bereavement and positivity needed to guide oneself to the other side. It truly shows just why Villagers have two Mercury Prize nominations under their belt.
