Lou Reed was very vocal in his concern about his health problems in the later years of his life, according to Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.
Metallica worked with Reed on 2011 album Lulu, and got to know the legendary musician well, often going to dinner with the star.
Talking to Q Magazine, Hammett revealed Reed's strange ritual when perusing the food on offer, saying: "He'd grab the menu and start chanting, 'No sugar! No sugar! I don't want sugar, no sugar!"

As well as liver problems, Reed also suffered from diabetes, and was paranoid about any sugar getting into his system, as Hammett explains: "He's so adamant because of his diabetes, but he'd make everyone in the restaurant know sugar couldn't come within 200 miles of his food. He was very adamant about the sugar thing."
Hammett and durmmer Lars Ulrich drummer speak fondly of their time with Reed in the interview, with Ulrich adding: "Lou's got a pretty twisted sense of humour. It was a pretty crazy run of different experiences. We had a great time doing it."
