James Murphy has discussed his bizarre and potentially brilliant idea to make the turnstiles on the New York subway play music.
In an interview with Sound Opinions, he reveals that he has been pushing the idea "for 14 years". He says that he wants different areas of the city to be associated with specific sounds that will remind people of that location when wherever they are.
"I want to make every station in New York have a different set of dominant keys, so that people who grow up will later on in life hear a piece of music and say, ‘Oh, that’s like Union Square" reveals Murphy.
It's certainly an ambitious project, but if there's one man who can pull it off it's DFA supremo and all round aural genius Murphy. He explains why he wants to do it, a warmth coming to his voice when he talks of his beloved New York, saying "It’s such a brutal city. I think one little gift of kindness would be nice.”
