Ian Curtis' kitchen table has sold on eBay for £8, 400 - after over 65 bids were made on the slightly macabre piece of furniture.

The table, which was in the same room as late Joy Division frontman Curtis when he hung himself, was put on eBay last week, with documentation confirming the authentication of the object from Ian's widow, Deborah, and his daughter, Natalie. However, it seems whilst the Curtis family did indeed legitamise the authenticity of the table, they did not do it so it could be auctioned off.

The Curtis family were then quick to voice their disapproval of the selling of the item, with former Joy Division members Bernard Sumner and Stephen Morris lending their support by releasing a statement to the NME condemning the auction, calling it "distasteful and upsetting".

The seller Tel Harrup responded by, oddly, pleading sympathy for himself, and said: "I can't un-exist the table. Reading the headlines that have gone around the world, I’m really unhappy with that, and it’s caused me distress because of the things that have been put out. My picture is on the listing and people have been saying, 'If I see that guy...' you know. "

Nevertheless, the auction went ahead, and the seller is bound to be pleased with his takings, which will fund his own band, according to an updated version of the eBay page.
