The Rolling Stones have announced a tour of Australia and New Zealand for next year, including the opening of Adelaide's new Oval Stadium. Can we expect UK and international gigs to follow?
The band's long-awaited return to fans down under will see them open the new Oval on 22 March, 2014 - with more dates in the region to follow. They will be joined by former bandmate Mick Taylor, who a member of the Stones from 1969 - 1974.
"It’s great to be invited to Adelaide to open the historic Oval," said frontman Mick Jagger in a statement. "We’re really looking forward to doing this gig, it will be the first time we’ve been to Adelaide in nearly 20 years, so see you there."
Guitarist Keith Richards added: "Hi everyone down in Adelaide, it’s been a while since we were in your back yard… see you on March 22 when we’ll take over your new stadium and make it our own, look forward to it."
An announcement on the band's official Facebook page reads: "The stage design for this show includes a massive ramp, over 30 metres long, which extends right into the audience allowing the Stones to interact directly with their audience. Known for their ground-breaking sets and use of cutting-edge technology, the Stones’ set design will feature video screens and special effects that will enhance the high-octane experience of attending a live Stones’ show."
The announcement brings new hope for a world tour and more UK gigs, after guitarist Ronnie Wood told The Sun earlier this year that the iconic rockers would reunite once more for a string of shows in February, following up their huge anniversary shows at London's Hyde Park in July.
"While the big wheel is rolling we are going to capture it before it stops totally," said Wood.
Speaking of their shows last year and their already legendary headline slot at Glastonbury, Wood added: "Everybody had a smile on their face, which was brilliant.
