Lorde has spoken about the writing of 'Royals', saying that she was inspired to name the track after seeing a picture of Kansas City Royals baseball player George Brett in National Geographic.

The 17-year-old singer, who stormed the charts with her debut single, has already opened up frequently about the meaning behind the track, which is obviously about the higher classes of society and money. However new details have emerged as to how Lorde came to be inspired to write the track.

"I've always been fascinated with aristocracy. I'm really interested in the Ivy Leagues, the final clubs, all the really old-money families, the concept of old money," she said in her interview with Rolling Stone. However now Lorde has explained that this was merely the second phase of her songwriting process as she likes to find a word to riff on when building song concepts.

"I'd been kind of thinking about writing that song for a while and been pulling together a couple little lines here and there," she told VH1. "I had this image from the National Geographic of this dude signing baseballs. He was a baseball player and his shirt said Royals. I was like, I really like that word, because I'm a big word fetishist. I'll pick a word and I'll pin an idea to that."

The photo in question is reportedly an image of George Brett an old baseball player for the Kansas City Royals.
