He's no stranger to bizarre news stories (in fact, Boris and bizarre go hand in hand), but Boris Johnson's recent comments have proved particularly controversial. The politician has stated that it was London, not Liverpool, that is to thank for the success of the Beatles.
The conservative Mayor of London, who was speaking at the London School of Economics in a speech entitled 'London, the gateway to Britain', said "The greatest band in the world came from Liverpool, but in the end they recorded their stuff in London and it was London that helped propel them around the world."
His claims are questionable given that The Beatles formed in Liverpool and all their members were from there, with the city boasting a museum dedicated to their story.
Joe Anderson, Mayor of Liverpool, criticised Johnson's comments, stating "This is becoming a bore now from Boris. It's yet another gaffe from him about Liverpool." Johnson has previously issued an apology over claiming in 2004 that "drunken fans" were partly responsible for the Hillsborough disaster. In the same article he declared that Liverpudlians "wallow" in their "victim status" following the murder and beheading of Ken Bigley in Iraq.
"This is typical Tory posturing" added Anderson. "They'll probably claim next they were backing Nelson Mandela all the way."
