The Prodigy have been announced as the third and final Sonisphere headliner, when the summer rock event returns to the festival scene in 2014.

Sonisphere confirmed it would be coming back bigger than ever in 2014, after ducking out of 2012 and 2013 events. Previously, rock legends Metallica and Iron Maiden have been confirmed to headline, now, The Prodigy join them.

The band have promised new music will performed at their Sonisphere show, with Liam Howlett of the band confirming in an official statement: "We cant wait to play Sonisphere 2014 , we will be hittin u with some brand new beats and noise Respecto The Prodigy"

A statement from festival organisers speaks of their excitement at the new booking, which reads: "Here it is! We are ecstatic to announce that the Prodigy will be making a triumphant return to Knebworth to take up the position as the Friday night headliner on Sonisphere 2014, having previously played a legendary show with Oasis in 1996 to a 250,000 strong crowd.

"Famous for the sort of energy fuelled, insane and pulsating show that you can feel in your bones, we know that The Prodigy will bring something very special to Sonisphere. Adding this to the already announced headliner sets of Iron Maiden and Metallica is pretty much guaranteed to get the very foundations of Knebworth House shaking."

Sonisphere was cancelled in 2012 and did not return in 2013, but organisers have recently promised a huge event in Knebworth Park in 2014 to celebrate 40 years of rock music at the iconic outdoor venue - largely expected to be festival's return, in one form or another.

The event is set to take place on 4-6 July 2014 at Knebworth, and the organisers announced the return with the rather un-rock and roll image below.

Acts to have played legendary events at Knebworth over the last 40 years include Oasis, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, Deep Purple, Genesis and many more. Sonisphere began at Knebworth in 2009 and saw acts such as Metallia, Iron Maiden, Linkin Park and Slipknot.
