This morning (December 18) it was announced that the great train robber Ronnie Biggs has passed away and already the Twittersphere has got the wrong end of the stick paying tribute to Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood and more mistaken stars.

Following recent cases of mistaken identity on Twitter, with users recently confusing Nelson Mandela  for Trevor McDonald, Ian Watkins as 'H' from Steps; the latest subject of mistaken identity is the great train robber Ronnie Biggs.

This time however the internet seems to be paying tribute to any Ronnie ever, selecting Ronnie Wood, Ronnie Barker and the Notorious B.I.G.

The train robber died aged 84 after suffering a series of strokes. He was given a 30-year sentence in 1965 but was released on compassionate grounds in 2009 due to his ailing health.

He became notorious for his involvement in the 1963 robbery of a Glasgow - London train, stealing £2.6million.
