Former Prime Minister John Major has praised One Direction for increasing "trust" in UK diplomacy.
Major credits the boyband's huge worldwide success, along with the achievements of Adele and Susan Boyle, for improving the UK's international relations. "You have Adele, One Direction, Susan Boyle. Wherever you go, they're household names and they have an implication for perception and thus soft power," Major told a parliamentary committee.
The former PM also praised national stalwarts the Premier League, Downton Abbey and the Royal Family for boosting trust in the British diplomacy. "Because people see and think about Britain, because of these elements of soft power, and because of our history, there is a greater tendency to trust the British in diplomacy," he added.
Whether Harry Styles and co improve increasingly fragile international relations is one thing, but they've at least been awarded the accolade of having the most in demand tour of 2013, beating Arctic Monkeys and even the Rolling Stones. Viagogo registered half a million searches on its website within 24 hours of the band, who formed on the 2010 series of The X Factor, announcing the tour dates for their Take Me Home tour.
