George Harrison reportedly refused to accept an OBE from The Queen, because his former Beatles bandmate Paul McCartney had been previously given a Knighthood.

The music legend is believed to have turned down the OBE (Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 2000, three years after McCartney was knighted in 1997. The Mail on Sunday published details of the snub, after obtaining papers which revealed the Beatles star's rejection.

Harrison, along with his Beatles bandmates accepted an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order) in 1965, but John Lennon later returned the award in a peace protest.

This week, musicians PJ Harvey and Adele were among stars and notable individuals to be mades MBEs by the Royal Family, with broadcaster Aled Jones and author Joanne Harris. Adele described her award as 'very posh indeed' following the ceremony.
