Arctic Monkeys' fifth album AM has beaten the likes of David Bowie, Queens Of The Stone Age and Vampire Weekend to be voted Album Of The Year 2013 by Gigwise readers.

The Mercury-nominated and chart-topping LP made chart history upon release, with AM becoming the Sheffield rockers' fifth consecutive No.1 album - making history as the first by an independent act to do so. The Official Charts Company reports that the album sold more than 157,000 copies in its first week of release, also making it the second fastest-selling album of 2013 - behind Daft Punk's massive Random Access Memories.

The album came in No.10 in our writers' top 50 albums of the year, but our readers spoke and named it their favourite LP released this year.

We wrote: "We weren't so sure about Alex Turner and co's fifth LP at first, (apparently we used the word 'coasting' in an early review) but after countless repeated listens it grew all over us like a really nasty rash. It became clear that it was not only of the best releases of the year, but the best of their career. With balls, bravado and a whole of rock n' roll swagger, AM sees Arctic Monkeys truly earning their role as Britain's Biggest Rock Band. Packed with wit, licks and true classics, this will be the record that marked the Monkeys as the first band to unify a generation since Nirvana or Oasis."

The top five in our readers' Album Of The Year 2013 were:
1. Arctic Monkeys - AM
2. Queens Of The Stone Age - Like Clockwork
3. Vampire Weekend - Modern Vampires Of The City
4. CHVRCHES - The Bones Of What You Believe
5. David Bowie - The Next Day

Meanwhile, the lowest votes came in for Katy Perry's Prism, Magna Carta Holy Grail by Jay Z, Washed Out By Paracosm, Kanye West's Yeezus and MBV by My Bloody Valentine.

Arctic Monkeys plus special guests Tame Impala, Miles Kane and Royal Blood will play London's Finsbury Park on Friday 23 and Saturday 24 May, 2014.
