The Mayor of Liverpool has slammed Boris Johnson as 'a fool' and demanded an apology after Johnson stated that it was London, not their hometown of Liverpool, that is to thank for the success of the Beatles.

The conservative Mayor of London, who was speaking at the London School of Economics in a speech entitled 'London, The Gateway to Britain' last month when he made the controversial comments.

"The greatest band in the world came from Liverpool, but in the end they recorded their stuff in London and it was London that helped propel them around the world," said Johnson.

Now responding to the claims to NME, Mayor Of Liverpool Joe Anderson says that Johnson's comments were "beyond ludicrous".

Demanding an apology, Anderson continued: "Boris has already made a fool of himself with comments about Liverpool – both on Hillsborough and in accusing the city of 'wallowing in pity' for holding a memorial service for British hostage Ken Bigley, who was beheaded in Iraq. These were obviously more serious issues than popular music, but nevertheless it's another embarrassing gaffe by him, which he'll have to apologise for."

Johnson has previously issued an apology over claiming in 2004 that "drunken fans" were partly responsible for the Hillsborough disaster.
