The inexorable march of Pussy Riot continues as the band have received an Oscar nomination for their documentary, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer.

The film has already been banned in Moscow, with the director telling The Observer: "The ban didn't surprise me too much, but we are not sure what we will do next, perhaps we will set up some private screenings there."

However, the director of the documentary Maxim Pozdorovkin has disagreed with the Russian governments ruling that the film is politically motivated, saying that it simply chooses to represent events in a non-bias fashion.

"I don't think our film is in any way a campaigning piece, although it is clearly made from our perspective," he commented. "The reaction to the Oscar shortlist was very interesting in Russia. They are convinced the academy is motivated by politics. In fact, its history is apolitical or even conservative in nature. Documentaries are chosen because they are great stories."

At the Oscars, Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer will feature in a category made up of 15 films, including The Square (a film about Tahrir Square), The Act of Killing (about Indonesian death squads) and Blackfish (a controversial piece about Whales at Seaworld).
