Pixies drummer David Lovering has described replacing Kim Deal as "impossible."

Bass player Kim Deal left the band in June, first being replaced by Kim Shattuck who was then unceremoniously fired. Shattuck was then replaced by Paz Lenchantin, who Lovering described in an interview with Brooklyn Vegan as "just wonderful."

The drummer went on to admit though that "When we were in the lurch when Kim Deal left it was a tough decision. Basically, no-one can replace Kim Deal. It would be impossible to do", before adding "But we're doing the best we can with it."

Lovering also discussed the importance of having a female member, saying that without it "We couldn't pull off the Pixies thing. It'd be a little too masculine. The feminine side gives it that Yin and Yang."

Pixies formed in 1986, with an 11 year hiatus between 1993 and 2004. The band recently released a limited edition EP titled, imaginatively, 'EP2.'
