Lily Allen and her big mouth have been blamed for revealing the winner of the 2014 BBC Sound Of... winner a day early on Twitter, after sending a congratulation message to Sam Smith online.

The 'Hard Out Here' singer sent a congratulatory tweet to Smith yesterday (January 9), a full day before today's official announcement, to which the BBC had been building up to all week. The shortlist had been revealed slowly day by day in lead up to the unveiling of the winner.

Smith - who let's face it, everyone knew was going to be named the winner anyway - appeared on BBC Radio 1's Breakfast Show this morning and told host Nick Grimshaw he actually had no idea he had secured the top spot until he saw Allen's tweet, blaming it jokingly on her "big mouth". It also transpired the two are actually third cousins, although they've never actually met thanks to his family being "huge".

Smith was officially announced as the winner of Sound of 2014 today, beating Ella Eyre, Banks, Sampha and George Ezra to the top spot. The singer, who shot to fame when he featured on Disclosure's number one single 'Latch', said he was "overwhelmed" by the win.
