The rather tempermental Courtney Love will attend court today (January 13) accused of posting defamatory tweets on Twitter.
Accused by attorney Rhonda Holmes of sending defamatory Tweets, Love will be the first to defend herself against such charges as well as the way in which she has behaved in the past. In order to combat these claims she will be following various lines of defense, including whether her statements were in fact true, whether her followers understood and whether she meant to send the Tweet publicly.
The actual post itself regards Holmes being hired to bring a fraud case against those managing the estate of the late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, Love's husband. Courtney sent out a Tweet in 2010 that alleged Holmes was corrupt: "I was fucking devastated [sic] when Rhonda J. Holmes esq. of san diego was bought off." (Love is also facing claims over a follow-up interview she gave to a reporter.)

Throughout the case Love will have to defend her behaviour on Twitter, a motion that she had attempted to block. However the judge stated that he would only support this motion in part, with other lawsuits against Love being withheld from the courtroom.
The judge stated: "The general rule is that except as permitted by statute, evidence of a person's character is not admissible to prove conduct on a specific occasion; However, evidence of conduct may be introduced to prove some relevant fact other than character or disposition, such as intent, knowledge or absence of mistake."
If Holmes wins, Love can expect to pay a hefty fine as reparations are based around the reach of Twitter profiles, with Celebrity Tweets receiving much more exposure. A long string of witnesses have been brought in for the case, including experts on Twitter, journalists and former assistants.
