Actress Lupita Nyong'O has said that she drew inspiration for her 12 Years A Slave role from King of Pop Michael Jackson.

The newcomer plays enslaved woman Patsey, who is beaten and raped at an early age, and Nyong'o has said that she was inspired by Jackson's shy, childlike nature.

Speaking to Dazed & Confused, the actress said, "There's something very Michael Jackson-like about Patsey - the childlike quality he always had. She had her childhood stripped away from her suddenly as soon as she became of sexual age."

Since rising to fame as part of The Jackson 5 at the age of 6, the late singer experienced a phenomenal, but troubled, career. His changing appearance and personal relationships generated a huge amount of controversy, right up to his death from an accidental drug overdose in 2009.

12 Years A Slave, which tells the life of Solomon Northup, a free black man who is kidnapped and sold into slavery, is in cinemas now.
