Courtney Love has appeared in court in the US to face trial over defamation charges, where she weeped when asked about her daughter Frances Bean.

The Hole star and Kurt Cobain's widow stands accused by attorney Rhonda Holmes of sending defamatory Tweets.

Spin reports that during the second full day of trial yesterday (Thursday 16 January, 2013) Love was accused of asking former employees to carry out illegal activities on her behalf.

"I was asked to hire a hacker," said Love’s former assistant Jessica Labrie, whom she met online. "I was asked to falsify legal documents, use legal letterhead and send out letters pretending to be a lawyer."

The case revolves around a suit filed after the grunge icon tweeted an accusation that her former attorney, Rhonda J. Holmes, had been 'bought off'. Standing in the dock,  Love told the jury that she’d meant the posting to be sent privately as a direct message on the site, and that she deleted the tweet a few minutes later as soon as she realised her mistake.

When asked why she didn't tweet a retraction or correction, Love replied: "It was so long ago. I don't remember if I rectified it in that moment or not."

She continued: "Do I have any proof from 2010 - and millions and millions of Tweets going back and forth? No one does."

It is reported that Love became very emotional when asked about her daughter, Frances Bean Cobain. It was put to her that Holmes was hired to protect her daughter, and when asked how important Frances Bean's well-being is to the defendant, her lip began to quiver and she teared up, saying: "It's the most important thing."

Love's former assistant Jessica Labrie testified that one of her duties was to monitor her Twitter feed of approximately 100 updates a day and deleting posts when "she had Tweeted too much bad things."

Labrie also testified that her relationship with Love ended after the Hole star questioned her trustworthiness, telling the jury: "She said I had stolen from her."

She added: "Courtney had gone on Twitter and sent me emails with allegations and humiliated me in public."

The trial continues.
