The organisers of The Governors Ball festival in New York have spoken about the 'honour' of having The Strokes headline this year, adding that the band have had an 'open invite' to play every year.
The Strokes, Vampire Weekend and Jack White have all been announced as headliners alongside Outkast as this year's Governors Ball music festival. Not only that, but Damon Albarn, Disclosure, Skrillex, Phoenix, Tyler, the Creator, La Roux, Earl Sweatshirt, Kurt Vile, Deafheaven, Jenny Lewis, Interpol, TV on the Radio, Julian Casablancas, the Kills, Grimes, James Blake, Broken Bells, Neko Case, Spoon, Janelle Monáe, Washed Out, Chance the Rapper, AlunaGeorge, Frank Turner and Run the Jewel are also included in the full line-up.
The news marks The Strokes' return to playing live, having refused to tour their 2013 album Comedown Machine and denying that they had any future plans.
Now, speaking in a Reddit MMA, 'TeamGovBall' revealed how the band only offered to reunite at 'the last minute'.
"We have tried to book The Strokes every single year that Gov Ball has existed (since 2011)," they said. "They essentially have had an open invite to play when they wanted. We got a call from their agent at the very last minute, saying that they wanted to reunite and play at the festival. Dream come true for us.
"We're New York City kids, and they are the greatest NYC rock band of our generation. BOOM"
The Governors Ball takes place at Randall Island in the US from June 6-8 2014. For more infromation visit Gigwise gig tickets.
