Last night (Sunday 26 January) Macklemore, Queen Latifah, Madonna, Ryan Lewis and Mary Lambert wed 33 couples live on air at the Grammy Awards.

The extraordinary performance shaped around the Macklemore song 'Same Love', saw the rapper tell the audience that weddings represent "the ultimate statement of equality, that all the couples are entitled to the same exact thing". The song has become something of an anthem for marriage, gender and sexual equality over the last year making it a fitting manifestation of the ideals behind it.

Half way through the performance Queen Latifah introduces the rows of couples, asking them to exchange rings and calling on the Grammy Awards audience to act as witnesses. Then Madonna joins the performance to add a heartfelt addition to the musical number.

The couples selected to take part in the performance represented a cross-section of sexualities and race, including Lewis' own sister and her boyfriend.
