You Me At Six have revealed how X Factor contestants wanted to perform their songs on the TV show, but were banned by producers as the band are not well known enough.

YMAS are heading to the UK No.1 spot this week with their fourth album, Cavalier Youth. Despite their rising fame, executives on the show are said to have denied requests to perform their tracks, fearing viewers wouldn't have a clue what was being sung.

"Me and our drummer Dan Flint were out with James and some other X Factor singers one night. A few of them are You Me At Six fans too," said YMAS frontman Josh Franceschi, in an interview with The Daily Star newspaper.

"They'd really wanted to do one of our songs. However the producers won't allow rock songs to be performed unless it's by famous bands like AC/DC."

Franceschi also added that he had struck up a friendship with controversial X Factor winner James Arthur as the two share a singing tutor, saying: "I got to know James because he has the same vocal coach as me."

You Me At Six are currently on course to score their first ever UK No.1 with album Cavalier Youth, outselling current chart topper Halcyon, by Ellie Goulding.

The British rock heavyweights are currently on a collision course with Goulding, set to take Halycon's No.1 position with Cavalier Youth. Currently the album is the highest selling new entry in the charts with Ellie Goulding slipping to No.2, Beyonce at No. 3 and Avicii swinging in at No. 4.
