Rapper DMX is set to participate in an upcoming charity boxing match with George Zimmerman, the man who killed Trayvon Martin.
The planned match has been confirmed by celebrity boxing promoter Damon Feldman, who spoke of plans for the match in an interview with new channel, CNN. George Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin in Sanford, Florida in 2012 in an incident that shocked and divided America and the world at large. Zimmerman was part of an unauthorised Neighbourhood Watch program, and killed unarmed Martin in a gated community. Now he's famous.
Feldman has denied the boxing match is racially motivated, telling CNN that "we’re not looking at [the fight] as a race thing" - but ultimately, in pitting Zimmerman against a black rapper, the race issue is inevitably, 'a thing'.
Thousands protested New York's Times Square following Zimmerman's acquittal
Feldman also added that he had received over 15,000 requests from individuals keen to step into the ring with Zimmerman, following the 'success' of previous celebrity boxing matches, including disgraced ice skater Tonya Harding and Paula Jones, a woman who once sued Bill Clinton for sexual harassment.
