Jared Leto has revealed that taking six years off from his acting career to focus on 30 Seconds To Mars made him a better actor. It definitely seems to have worked, as he is now hotly tipped to pick up an Academy Award for his role in Dallas Buyers Club.

Leto is currently one of the hottest properties in Hollywood since playing transgender AIDS patient Rayon in the critically acclaimed movie, and claims that the ups and downs of his music career helped him prepare for the challenging role.

"I think that the six years I took off was one of the best decisions I've ever made, in my entire life," he tells Collider.com. "I think it made me a better actor. I think it made me a better person. We really only have to offer an equal and opposite reflection of the experiences that we've had in our lives, and the time away was crucial."

"I couldn't have done any of that [performance in 'Dallas Buyers Club] - not even close - without that time away. I was chasing other dreams, and that's a powerful thing. When you fail, you win a little and you fail again, you take all of those lessons and you apply it."

Leto has successfully managed to achieve success with both his music and acting careers, but recently revealed than many people believe that Dallas Buyers Club is his first foray into movies, having taken such an extended period out of acting.

"There are people who think ‘Dallas Buyers Club’ is my first movie," he told Variety magazine in a recent interview. "I’ve become a musician looking for an acting job, rather than an actor looking to make an album."
