Green Day surprised Australian fans last night (February 20) by playing a surprise gig in a tiny Sydney pub.

Billie Joe Armstrong and co announced the free show 45 minutes beforehand via Twitter, prompting hundreds of delighted fans turned up at The Captain Cook Pub in Paddington at 11pm.

Frontman Armstrong reportedly strolled out onto the stage and commented: "I guess a few of you saw the tweet," when he saw the crowd. The band aired the likes of 'Holiday', 'Burnout' and 'St Jimmy' during the intimate show.
