Though Alex Turner's bizarre acceptance speech probably gained the most attention of the night, Arctic Monkeys' live performance also set the stage on fire. Literally. Now Alex Turner has revealed that the pyrotechnics were at the insistence of the event organisers.

During their performance of 'R U Mine' at Wednesday's (19 February) Brit Awards, giant letters spelling out the band's album title AM were set on fire.

Speaking to NME, Turner admitted, "[The organisers] said, 'Do you want to perform at the Brits?' And the condition was we set an AM on fire." He added, "Should people expect pyro at our shows now? I don't think so. I'm not going to rule it out, but that was hilarious."

The band won the Best British Group award, and also received the much-hyped Best British Album award. Collecting the gong, Turner told the crowd, "Yeah, that rock'n'roll, it seems like it's faded away sometimes, but it will never die. And there's nothing you can do about it."

AM, Arctic Monkeys' fifth studio album, was released in September to critical acclaim, and has sold 560,000 copies in the UK alone.
