Alex Turner has revealed that his bizarre acceptance speech at The Brits on Wednesday (19 February), which ended with him dropping the microphone on the floor deliberately, was down to nerves.

The band were awarded the much-coveted Album of the Year award at The Brits, but Turner's speech led some to question his sobriety, and indeed his sanity. The singer said: "That rock and roll,eh? That rock and roll, it just won't go away. It might hibernate from time to time, sink back into the swamp. I think the cyclical nature of the universe in which it exists, demands it adheres to some of its rules."

Hang on, there's more. Turner then added: "But it's always waiting there, just around the corner, ready to make its way back through the sludge and smash through the glass ceiling, looking better than ever." We think you probably get the picture now, so we'll spare you the rest.

Speaking to the Daily Mail though, Turner revealed, "In public I'm a quiet guy, so doing anything in front of lots of people always makes me nervous. People always assume if you're in a band that's been on the scene for ages, that you're going to be really confident, but that's not true."

This was the third time Arctic Monkeys have been awarded Album of the Year at The Brits - they won in 2007 for Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not, and again in 2008 for Favourite Worst Nightmare.
