Organisers of Manchester's Summer in the City festival have denied reports that Morrissey will be performing.
The rumours can be traced back to one member of a band already confirmed to play the July festival. James guitarist Larry Gott had previously claimed Morrissey will play in an interview with BBC Radio 6 yesterday.
"We're playing Manchester Castlefield [Bowl]," James frontman Tim Booth told Lauren Laverne during the band's appearance on the radio station. "There's a festival that they’re starting - we're headlining one night, the Pixies are doing another night. I don't know the other two nights..."
Guitarist Gott then answered: "The National and Morrissey." Lead singer Booth tried to backtrack, saying: "Oh, we're getting signs from our minders saying, 'Don't tell them! Don’t tell them!' Apparently we’re not meant to talk about some of this stuff."
Unfortunately, the damage was done and Summer in the City have now released a statement denying the reports. "Event organisers are unaware of any plans to put Morrissey on in Manchester at all this summer," they told Manchester Evening News.
Morrissey may not be performing at the festival, but grunge icons Pixies will be supported by rising Brit-rock stars on Thursday 10 July, while Britpop heroes James will be joined by Starsailor on Friday 11 July. Gates to both shows will open at 5pm.
More special guest performances for the two Summer In The City shows are set to be announced soon. For more information visit Gigwise gig tickets.
